  • Terran Lane
  • Susana Soriano

  • Graduated Students

    Taimur Aslam
Taimur's MS thesis, A Taxonomy of Security Faults in Operating Systems, explored how to classify faults in Unix that led to security compromises. The classification can then be used for testing and software development. Taimur is now at Motorola. Taimur can be reached as aslam@shiraz.sps.mot.com.

    Jai Sundar Balasubramani
Jai recieved his MS degree in the spring of 1998. He is now working with COAST sponsor Hewlett Packard.

    Steve Chapin
Steve completed his Ph.D. in the fall of 1993 and joined the faculty at Kent State University. While at Purdue he developed the MESSIAHS system for his dissertation entitled Scheduling Support Mechanisms for Autonomous, Heterogenous, Distributed Systems. The work on MESSIAHS has some direct application to securing distributed computing environments. Steve was also the person who came up with the original COAST acronym. Steve is currently a member of the faculty at Syracuse University.

    Mark Crosbie
Mark received his MS degree and departed in 1996 for a job with COAST sponsor Hewlett Packard. While with COAST, Mark helped design and maintain the on-line archive. He also helped define the original concept of our agent-based intrusion detection scheme.

    Jennifer Dick
Jennifer was involved with the OPUS project as a undergraduate. She was awarded an NSF Graduate Fellowship as one of the top undergraduate students in the country. She graduated with a B.S. degree in 1994 went on to work for Federal Express.

    Bryn Dole
Bryn received his MS degree with COAST and departed in 1996 for a job with COAST sponsor Sun Microsystems. While with COAST, Bryn performed some of our firewall maintenance and experimentation, and was one of the people responsible for our discovery of the weaknesses in Kerberos 4.

    Todd Ellis
Todd received his MS degree with COAST and departed in 1996 for a job with Harris Corporation. While with COAST, Todd helped with archive maintenance, and with the development of the final IDIOT intrusion detection prototype.

    Dan Farmer
Although Dan graduated from Purdue prior to the official start of COAST, his work on the COPS package was part of the foundation of COAST. Dan may be reached at zen@fish.com; he is currently an independent consultant.

    Jose Omar Garcia-Fernandez
Jose recieved his MS degree in the spring of 1998. He is currently working at Hewlett-Packard in intrusion detection and network security.

    Abbie Hughes
Abbie recieved her B.S. degree in Compuer Engineering in December 1998. She is currently working at Teradyne in the Telecommunications Testing Department as a Software Engineer in Deerfield, Illinois.

    Gene Kim
Gene did most of the work on the Tripwire tool while he was an undergraduate at Purdue. After completing a MS degree in Computer Sciences at the University of Arizona, Gene is now working at a software start-up firm. He may be contacted at gkim@teleport.com

    Ganesh Krishnan
Ganesh Krishnan graduated with an M.S. in Fall 1997. He is currently working for Intel.

    Ivan Krsul
Ivan recieved his Ph.D. in May, 1998. His dissertation Software Vulnerability Analysis developed a classification of vulnerabilities in computer software. His work shows that a large number of vulnerabilities result from assumptions that programmers make about their environment. He also showed that machine learning tools could be used to extract unknown information from vulnerability information. In support of his thesis, Ivan developed the COAST Vulnerability Database which has over 200 deeply analyzed vulnerabilities.

    Markus Kuhn
Markus came to Purdue in August of 1997 on a Fulbright Fellowship. He left a year later with his MS, and entered the PhD program at Cambridge University in the U.K. In between, he contributed to a number of projects, including the Synkill and Secure Patch efforts.

    Sandeep Kumar
Sandeep received Ph.D. in August, 1995. His dissertation, Classification and Detection of Computer Intrusionsdeveloped a new approach to intrusion detection. He is currently working for Sun Microsystems.

    Steve Lodin
Steve left COAST in 1996 after receiving his MS degree. He attended Purdue as a GM Fellow, and returned to work at Delco Electronics. While with COAST he helped with archive maintenance, development of the final IDIOT prototype, development of our firewalls resource page, and with our analysis of Kerberos 4.

    Tanya Mastin
Tanya left Purdue in 1997 after receiving her BS degree. She went to work at Hewlett-Packard. While a student at Purdue, Tanya served as our webmaster and supervised the crew working on the WWW pages and FTP archive. She also served as president of the local ACM student chapter, among many other activities.

    Karthic Nataraj
Karthic left Purdue in Fall 1997 with an MS degree. He is currently working for Microsoft.
