The Nature of Biometrics

Feb 13, 1998

Abstract

This presentation explores the growing field of biometrics, their characteristics, and the appropriate use of biometrics technologies. Biometrics is the use of metric that are intrinsic properties of people for the purpose of identity, such as finger imaging. Biometrics date back to the 1800's with the manual application of the Bertillion system in law enforcement. Now, with the advent of computers and digital capture devices, biometric technologies are revolutionizing the identification and security industries. Being a fledgling industry, there have been some overstated claims of capabilities of certain technologies. This presentation will look at the difficulties in establishing proper claims of accuracy in large-scale applications and some inherent challenges of each popular biometric. Issue of public safety verses personal privacy and the use of biometrics in computer security applications will be discussed. A finger imaging system will be demonstrated with a detailed description of its operation.

About the Speaker

Rich Forkert, Director of Applied Research at NBS Imaging Systems, has expertise in image processing, image compression, and biometrics. Graduating from Purdue University with a M.S.E.E, he took a position in the Image Processing Research Laboratory at the MITRE Corporation in 1987. While at MITRE, he developed image processing algorithms for early detection of breast cancer using mammography, co-invented high compression rate algorithms for the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC), consulted on the FBI's Integrated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), and developed the Adaptive Wavelet Image Compression (AWIC) algorithm which was submitted to the ISO JPEG 2000 call for algorithms this fall. In July 1996, he joined NBS Imaging Systems, the pioneer in the identification card systems industry. Currently Rich Forkert sits on the Biometric Committee of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), and has recently joined the ANSI B10.8 Committee for the establishment of a Driver's License ID Card Standard as a contributor in the field of biometrics.
