Central Hospital, located in a major U.S. city, is dispersed over
several acres of land. It is routine for doctors and pharmacists to
travel to four or five different buildings in one day. In order to
avoid confusion in paperwork and data management, the hospital's administration
decided that the doctors and pharmacists would carry small laptops
with specialized tracking and management software installed on them.
Instead of using paper-based charts, the company moved all of the
patient, prescription, and treatment information on the computers,
which are connected to a wireless network so that all employees involved
in managing a patient's care has timely access to the information.
